I had an opportunity to visit Mozambique, Africa from the end of February to the beginning of March, 2016. Mozambique experienced a civil war until 1992, and it is still a developing country.

During my stay, I was really impressed by shining eyes of the children wearing school uniforms who I met at a rural area. The defense for a bachelor’s degree at the Eduardo Mondale University was also very impressive as follows.

All the candidates for a bachelor’s degree have to pass the Defense. It is open to the faculties and students of the department and I was also invited to it.  Following a 15 min presentation, several professors sitting in the front row asked various kinds of questions for 30 min.  It sure is a very tough but valuable experience for young candidates.  In a tense atmosphere, she made a nice presentation and we could feel her effort to try to answer to every question.  How happy and joyful she was when her success with a high score was announced by the chairman.

When it comes to international collaboration with developing countries, we tend to consider our superior technologies would be beneficial for the developing countries. It’s all right, but we should know that we could learn many things from them and through the international collaboration, as well.  I hope more Japanese students would go abroad to feel and learn something valuable for their future.
